I can’t think of a better time to start a new blog than in
the New Year. Sure, there were other new things I thought I might try in
2013—yoga, keeping plants alive, swearing off eating in bed—but I’ve accepted
that those things simply aren’t going to happen. So here I am, in hopes that
this blog will enable me to connect with writers and vice versa. My goal is to
provide a bit of insight into agenting, the world of foreign and other
subsidiary rights, and the goings-on at Folio Literary Management, the agency I
call home.
There have been some exciting new developments in
Folio-land, chief among them a fabulous new colleague who is now co-heading the
International Rights Department with me.
This means I’m able to spend much more time focusing on growing my
domestic client list. In 2013, I’ll be requesting more manuscripts, giving more
revise and resubmit notes, and looking to sign more clients in more genres (in
fact, I already requested one manuscript and offered representation with the
span of a week—fingers crossed!).
I can’t wait to see what 2013 holds. I welcome comments,
questions, and blog suggestions!
Congrats on your new blog and a New Year, Molly!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tracey!
DeleteYayy for the new blog! Maybe you were about to do this anyway, but I hope you get a GFC widget so I can keep tabs on you. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks! I shall now scramble to figure out what that is and add it ASAP. :)
DeleteHello Molly. I look forward to your posts and I'm sure I will have many questions along the way. Since your blog was created with Blogger, to add a Follow This Blog widget, sign in to your blog, go to Design, choose Layout, then click on Add Gadget. There is a list of gadgets you can choose from. Let me know if you need any help. I have a post, as well, and I would love to link to some of your posts now and then. I'll also give you a shout out on Twitter to help get things rolling. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dee Ann! I've added a "Follow by Email" widget. I really appreciate your help.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Just signed up. Now, keep 'em coming! lol
DeleteYay for a new agent blog! I'm signing up as soon as I finish this comment.
ReplyDeleteYour wish list includes books like Daughter of Smoke and Bone? I'd never compare my writing to the author, but my storyline would be in the same vein, with winged creatures and where good always wins, but never without a good fight. IS that what you mean?
Thank you!
Talynn
Thank you! I meant less in the sense of that specific storyline and more in the sense of the genre, world-building and writing style. If something is *too* similar to that storyline, it could be hard to make it stand out in the market. That said, I'd never say "never" without having seen your specific project!
DeleteThank you, Ms. Jaffa! Really, what I meant was it's in the same vein as the world building and fantasy elements, but it's not the same story. Just winged creatures to fight, both good and evil, an MC that is loosing her identity and running for her life.
DeleteI know that sounds "been done before" but there is an unusual twist. Right. Everyone says that. But to my knowledge, mine is unique.
Okay, I'll quit babbling. I just wanted to make sure about what you were looking for. Now, I need braveness to just send it see what you think...
When I saw your blog went live this was how excited I was to check it out: http://andimjulie.tumblr.com/post/36290193408/texashumor-how-i-look-when-someone-reminds-me
ReplyDeleteHave I told you lately that I love you?
DeleteYay! Welcome to the Blogosphere, Molly!
ReplyDeleteI think you should have big pictures of your clients just below the header. I have a great shot of me eating a meatball sub that I could send you.
Thanks, K! I think we should get each of you to take a picture with your sandwich of choice, and then I'll post them all at once. And I'll rename the blog something sandwich-related. Between the Slices? The Sandwich Keeper? Ziploc Baggies Full of Clients? You're better at this sort of thing than I am...
DeleteHi Molly
ReplyDeleteThank you for deciding to blog agent-stuff in 2013. I would love to see a post that discloses a few stats on what percentage of clients that you take on get their first book published, how long (on average) that process takes, what happens if you are unable to publish it (i.e. do you ever have to give a writer the heave-ho, and if so how long would you give it before doing so), how you deal with overseas clients in terms of payment, communication and promotion bla bla bla. Are these facts that most agents keep under wraps until they sign a client or is this something you'd be willing to share? I appreciate you can't speak for all agents but I just think it would make the world a much clearer place for us writers if we knew some of these things in advance.
Thanks Molly.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely take those into consideration as I plan out future posts.
DeleteWelcome to the joys of blogging!! Looking forward to it, Molly. :) As a side note, I think keeping plants alive and swearing off eating in bed are highly overrated, and I'm with you, there. ;) Yoga is supposed to be good for us though... maybe in 2014...
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for the new year!!
Thank you, Aurelia! Happy new year to you, too. I always mean to sign up for yoga classes, but somehow the ever-familiar treadmill just seems easier. Maybe next year, indeed!
DeleteGood luck with the new blog! I can't wait to see what you'll be talking about!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kendall! Best wishes for the new year.
